Romantic gay dads traveling the world with their children? You bet!

Our newest correspondent, Haven Calor, is a traveling dad. Here is his first blog post.

It was July 4, 2009 in New York City, Manhattan. Sean, my husband, and I strolled from  42^nd Street back up 8^th Avenue to our hotel after seeing a light-hearted, romantic comedy in the evening. It was a warm evening, the stroll was romantic, and we touched hands for a few seconds and gazed into each other’s eyes: what an apropos moment for a married, gay couple of 5 years.

We even had fireworks from the Hudson River as a backdrop; however, something/some things were missing … our two, 9 month old twins, Ammon and Carter who were back home in Tennessee with grandparents. Almost simultaneously we said, “I miss the babies.”

We were no longer a family of 2 who had blithely roamed cities in the United States and Europe. We were a blissful family of 4. That  4^th of July night in New York City we vowed that we four would travel as a family and do things as a family because we were both in our forties, had been through so much (failed adoptions, in vitro fertilization, surrogates!) to have our children. We wanted to enjoy every minute both together as a couple and with our children.

Friends, I know from experience now, this is the time of life that your children want to be with you. They idolize you, they want to emulate you, they love your company, and they want to play with you. I’ve taught middle school and high school-aged children for almost 25 years, and, as we all know, there is a time coming when our children will not want to be with us.

Sean and I don’t club hop, stay in posh hotels, or have expensive, romantic dinners. We have the money  (Sean is a physician, and I am a university professor) to travel with children, and leave them with a full-time nanny (or nannies) while we do what we adults want to do, but we want to be parents.

Labor Day week of 2012 Sean and I spent our wedding anniversary in Las Vegas….with Carter and Ammon! We four had a blast! What did these “DadsAboutWorld” do with their children in Las Vegas? Where did we stay, and what did we do? Please allow me to tell you in the next blog!
