TBT: The UpStairs Lounge Massacre

Last week marked the 40th anniversary of the largest LGBT massacre in history and we wanted to remember those who lost their lives that Sunday in New Orleans on June 24, 1973.

On June 24, 1973, a fire was set inside the UpStairs Lounge where 65 people, many of them members the nation’s first gay church, gathered for beers. It was 8pm when the doorbell of the bar rang and rang again, and when the boyfriend of the bartender Buddy Rasmussen answered the door he was hit with the smell of lighter fluid and then a fireball.

The fire claimed the lives of 34 people and was met with lackluster coverage from police and the media. No one was ever charged with the crime though a man named Rodger Dale Nunez had claimed responsibility several times. He committed suicide in 1974.

We remember those who died in the horrific fire and pay our respects.
