Our Global Correspondent Robert Sharp is co-founder of Out-Adventures, a gay tour company offering gay tours and vacations in over 20 countries around the globe. He spoke with us about his love of gay adventure travel. We selected his journeys as this month’s Parting Shots in our magazine. Here’s this expanded story and more of his photos.

1.   Why do you love adventure travel?
There’s a certain camaraderie involved when a group of guys is pushed outside of their comfort zone. You’d be amazed at the bonds formed when the body or mind is put under the right kind of stress.

2. How far in advance do you plan the trip?
I try to plan my trips around 12 months out, because I’m a busy guy, but every now and then I try to hit a new destination spontaneously.

3. Who did you travel with?
Always with a local, for part or all of my trip. There’s a certain perspective that you can’t achieve from a guidebook or the internet.

4. What surprised you about adventure travel?
How up close and personal adventure travel gets you to the real people of a country. I mean, I love my four star hotels, but I try to mix things up so I’m able to interact with normal people.

5. What do you know now that you wish you knew before your first adventure trip?
That Adelie penguins may lack thumbs and big brains, but they have the ability to launch their own feces out of their bodies like a slingshot. No joke, trust me.

6. Favorite moment was…
I can’t choose one. Perhaps five men breaking the axel of a tuk tuk in Nepal. It wasn’t funny at the moment, but it made for a great story for us and the driver. Don’t worry, we paid to replace his axel!

7. Best time to go…
I love to travel on the cusp of high season. Typically the weather is still great, but wherever I am the hotels/beaches/trails aren’t quite as jam-packed.

8. Gay Factor
I love a little gay everywhere I go. I try as much as possible to support establishments that I know are gay-welcoming. Even if it’s just a coffee shop. It’s a great way to meet people if you aren’t on the dating and hookup apps.

1. Kathmandu, Nepal, just outside of the ancient religious complex of Swayambhunath, better known as the Monkey Temple.

2. Lounging on the banks of the Betwa River in Orccha, India. The Bundelkhand Riverside Hotel is a premium location to explore the nearby ruins.

3. Viva Cuba et America! A local Cuban celebrates his love for Cuba and America on the dash of his retro car, hoping for an end to the current embargo.

4. Nothing says Morocco like a camel ride to the top of the mountainous dunes in the Sahara Desert!

5. A few OUT Adventurers on a jungle zip line and canopy adventure in gay-welcoming Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica.

6. The rooftop of the Frangipani Palace Hotel. Although there are hotels that are more luxurious, you can’t beat the location and view! For something a bit more Chic, try The Plantation.

I traveled with Out Adventures for the first time this year in Croatia and it was an incredible experience. This post makes me want to go on all the other trips they offer!
