We spoke to ManAboutWorld Global Correspondent DJ Yabis (born in the Philippines but based in Dusseldorf) about his passion for travel, and we selected his journey  to his homeland as this month’s Parting Shots in our magazine. Here’s the expanded story and more of his photos.

1.   Why do you love to travel?

It’s very simple. I love traveling because I am happiest when I am on the road.

2. How far in advance do you plan your trips?

It depends if I need a visa! For trips that don’t require one, I usually plan 2-4 weeks in advance. Mostly just flight and accommodation booking. I’m very spontaneous.

3. Who do you travel with?

I usually travel with Michael, my German partner, or with friends. I also like traveling alone sometimes.

4. What has surprised you about travel?

That I’m actually not so special. There are millions of people flying everywhere everyday!

5. Favorite moment was …

OMG too many but off the top of my head my favorite moment was seeing the Northern Lights in Saariselkä, Finland. In the Philippines, my favorite moment was scuba diving in Batangas. I’m scared of the water and I still am!

6. Best time to go…

December to May to avoid the rainy season.

7. Gay Factor

Manila has some great gay areas and other major destinations always have something gay. Boracay Island, for instance, has a fabulous gay bar by the beach called Juice Bar. You can meet gays everywhere since Filipino gays are pretty out and they love foreign visitors.
