ManAboutWorld Ft. Lauderdale Travel Guide 2016Fort Lauderdale may just be the best gay American city we’ve got, where gays have been welcomed for decades to live, explore, and enjoy a taste of the good life which is why we are proud to announce the Ft. Lauderdale 2016 travel guide is available for download now.

It’s 38 square miles of sprawling, sun-soaked metropolis and miles of white sand beach, and in the center of it all, one of the great gayborhoods in the world — Wilton Manors.

The free Ft. Lauderdale 2016 travel guide puts the spotlight on gay locals who reveal their favorite hotspots and hidden gems, and we even dish out a few fabulous day-trip ideas, for those mornings when you want to get out of town for the chic fast-paced buzz of Miami, or the laid-back opulence of Palm Beach.

Our free guide to Fort Lauderdale delves deep into the city, highlighting the best of its restaurants, nightlife, shopping, culture, and gay guesthouses. In the years before the Stonewall riots, when ideas like gay marriage were still far-fetched pipe dreams, these guesthouses were sanctuary’s, a place where gay men could be themselves, free to flirt and frolic (among other F-words) without fear of prejudice.

VowsCongratulations, Florida! On Jan. 6, the Sunshine State became the 36th state to legalize gay marriage. And so we immediately started thinking of places you could spend your honeymoon. The above photo of Little Palm Island, just off the coast of Key West, isn’t too shabby of a choice. But whether you celebrate at the St. Regis in Bal Harbor or the Delano in Miami, the real news here is that Florida is finally on the gay marriage map!

Our correspondent Jeff Guaracino fills us in on some bigs news hitting Fort Lauderdale in 2015:

Always ahead of the curve, Ft. Lauderdale announced last week at the 15th annual Community Marketing International Conference on Gay and Lesbian Tourism a groundbreaking transgender travel initiative. For the next three years, the Southern Comfort Transgender Conference will convene there. Ft. Lauderdale is the first destination to address the needs of the Transgender community with specific ads and messaging that is sensitive to this unique group.

mawWhile it implies objectivity, “best” is almost always subjective, or — at best — qualified. When we ask for the best hotel or restaurant, the answer can be as much a reflection of our sensibilities as it is of any objective quality measure.

Generally, “you get what you pay for,” but finding “the best” isn’t simply a matter of picking the most expensive option — it’s knowing what resonates for you. In our first two years of ManAboutWorld, we’ve seen more than 100 destinations and 1,500 hotels on six continents. Much of it is a blur. But some of it stands out. Editors’ Choice winners are the ones that resonated most for us. The ones that truly shared our values. The ones we would go back to… and sometimes do, when we’re not busy searching out new and different places to recommend.  (download the list as a pdf from the link at the end)

And this year’s Awards go to…

DESTINATION OF THE YEAR: Fort Lauderdale

Gay-popular since the ‘70s, Ft. Lauderdale is still on the rise while other gay destinations are mainstreaming. With its white sand gay beach, 16 exclusively gay guesthouses (the most of any destination), and a nightlife scene that’s busy seven nights a week, Ft. Lauderdale is one of the few places where you don’t have to rely on a phone App to hook up. And while it wins our hearts with its sun, sand, surf and fun, it’s also home to the Stonewall Museum, one of the only permanent spaces in the U.S. devoted to exhibitions relating to LGBT history and culture, and the world’s first AIDS museum.

Not content to rest on gay assets, the county’s tourism promotion board sets industry standards. The county has worked tirelessly in the last year to bring new gay events and many meetings to Greater Ft. Lauderdale, and to support the advancement of LGBT rights in Florida and around the world. In July, it became the first Convention and Visitors Bureau in the country to call for a repeal of its states’ gay marriage ban. It is currently conducting the first survey of transgendered travelers, showing sensitivity to all segments of the LGBT travel market.

Previous winner: Provincetown, Massachusetts

Well, we didn’t exactly find any convents, but the editorial team at ManAboutWorld did find resorts that were pretty close to bathhouses … and almost everything in between. Not to mention all sorts of things that might make you squeal in delight. Or horror. Or both.

In choosing a gay resort, the “Sexual Temperature” is as important as the quality of accommodations — maybe even more important. So we spent two days in December inspecting all 19 of Ft. Lauderdale’s gay resorts (nineteen!) The results are plotted here, with our Palm Ratings of quality charted against our Flame Ratings of sexual temperature. (Click on the chart to enlarge it.)

The full report, along with our insider guide to Ft. Lauderdale’s restaurants, clubs, gyms, stores, bars, museums, sex clubs and gardens is in the January/February issue of ManAboutWorld Magazine. If you’re not a subscriber, you can download the issue as part of a free trial subscription on the AppStore, or you can become a ManAboutWorld member for free and download an old-school pdf of the full guesthouse reviews and ratings.

Have you been to a gay resort? What’s your ideal Sexual Temperature/Resort Quality combination?

Suddenly feel the urge to go surfing?

This is groundbreaking but it’s also just plain hot. Check it out here.
[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LSARzrH_jUk]
With this TV ad, Ft. Lauderdale becomes among the first mainstream tourism board  to integrate gay messaging in an otherwise mainstream promotion.

DiscoverAmerica released this ad earlier this year that featured two gay men on a cable car.

But this is a great trend that we strongly encourage. It’s more and more about “traveling while gay” versus “gay travel.”
