THIS YEAR’S WINNERS:

DESTINATION OF THE YEAR: Ireland

We awarded Destination of the Year to Ireland for its historic marriage equality referendum and its emphatic global invitation to LGBT travelers to experience their unique hospitality.

“Ireland is the first country to embrace marriage equality by popular vote, but even more significantly, Ireland showed the world that a country of strong faith could look beyond outdated traditions and uphold the religious values that embrace its LGBT family,” said ManAboutWorld’s co-founder Billy Kolber.

AIRLINE OF THE YEAR: Delta Air Lines

For New York-based ManAboutWorld, Delta Air Lines has long been a preferred carrier. They are recognized this year for their sponsorship of GLAAD, the IGLTA and gay pride in many cities, their innovative discounts on first-class travel to many pride festivals, and their devotion to delivering consistently superior customer service while their legacy competitors floundered.

BEST SOCIAL MEDIA CAMPAIGN: #LoveIsLove, Fort Lauderdale, Florida

The hashtags were flying in Fort Lauderdale this year, when the Greater Fort Lauderdale Visitors Bureau launched its #LoveIsLove campaign celebrating marriage equality. One hundred couples of all sexual orientations took to the beach to wed, snap photos, and share on social media to spread the word of marriage equality in a brave and groundbreaking and timely effort.

“When marriage equality became law in Florida, Ft. Lauderdale was quick to invite couples of all sexual orientations, including heterosexuals, to celebrate the triumph of love in highly publicized event,” says ManAboutWorld editor in chief, Ed Salvato. “It was a truly heartwarming act that reaffirmed that it’s all about the right to love whom you want, but in a way that reflected the characteristic hospitality in one of our favorite destinations on the planet in a smart and successful social media execution.”

GAYBORHOOD OF THE YEAR: Chueca

Madrid’s thriving Chueca area, is recognized for its thriving gay scene and ongoing renaissance. Like previous winners Le Village in Montreal, and Wilton Manors in Fort Lauderdale, Chueca remains a vibrant gay neighborhood, in an era where so many similar areas are being mainstreamed.

TOUR OPERATOR OF THE YEAR: HE Travel

The granddaddy of all gay tour companies, HE Travel was founded in 1973 by Hanns Ebensten who was widely credited as the “inventor” of gay travel. Today it’s among the most innovative and fastest-growing tour operators, second only to Atlantis Events/RSVP Vacations in the number of gay passengers it ‘moves’ each year. We recognize them for continuing Hanns’ legacy of opening more of the world for gay travelers to visit safely and comfortably.

EVENT OF THE YEAR: Gay Wine Weekend

Sonoma Valley’s Gay Wine Weekend uncorks three full days of wine events bringing together gay winemakers and gay wine lovers. The annual June event organized by Out in the Vineyard is a gem of Sonoma summertime, home to some of the world’s most prestigious wines and wineries.
