With 13 states in the U.S. (as well as the District of Columbia) now with legalized same-sex marriage, there are more and more choices for same-sex couples to choose from for destination weddings and honeymoons. In the first year since same-sex weddings became legal in New York, NYC & Co found that more than 8100 same-sex licenses were issued in the city alone.

The travel industry loves same-sex weddings. We are a new group of potential customers. We tend to book our ceremonies very quickly and we opt-out of the standard cookie cutter ceremony. Just read the Sunday New York Times Wedding announcements, the LGBT community is anything but typical.

With so many options to celebrate our love, it pays to be a smart and well-researched groom or bride. Here are just a few of your choices to mark the most important decision of your life (that is after you come out!)

Great trip ideas can come from travel columns like this one, from your favorite travel magazine or recommendations from friends and family. Business travel — if planned correctly — can be a perfect time to research your next pleasure trip. Yes, I know we are always in a rush to get to that next meeting, answer that pesky text or resolve the work emergency, but hey it’s travel. Don’t forget to stop and smell the fun!

Viva Las Vegas—midweek

I was invited to speak at the Las Vegas International Tourism Safety and Security Conference. I hadn’t been to Las Vegas since 2007, so I was excited to see what had changed along the famed Las Vegas Strip. A midweek trip proved to be an exceptional option to avoid the crowds but still enjoy all of the amenities that Vegas has to offer.

Do you need to getaway quick? Does room service and a maid sound just fabulous?  Travel doesn’t always have to be far away from home (just far enough!). Could it be as easy as checking into a local luxury hotel that is part treat and part escape. When you travel as much as I do, sometimes a hotel can be just another hotel. There are two close-by hotels that surprised me both by their incredible views, luxurious but affordable prices, and staff who make everyone feel VIP. And guess what? They are both in two cities that are worth spending more time in — Baltimore and Philadelphia.

If you missed the Winter Party Festival in Miami this past weekend you still have time to travel to one of your favorite dance events.

For 32 years, a decadent dance party helped to define the New York spring travel calendar. Next weekend, The Saint At Large will stage RITES XXXIV: THE BLACK PARTY. This year’s theme is “Rough Trade at Luna Park.” Held on the weekend closest to the vernal equinox, this party starts on Saturday, March 23rd at the legendary Roseland Ballroom in New York City.

Get ready for an adventure. This dance party is set in the outskirts of Rome in an abandoned amusement park. Strange Live Acts will be played out as a 5-act opera set in a cinematically inspired immersive environment. The fantasy ends sometime Sunday.

If staying up all-night dressed in your best leather is not for you, you might be interested in the Black Party Expo, now in its fourth year.

Rome for the weekend? You bet! With the Pope’s stunning announcement of his retirement and spring upon us, now is an exciting time for a quick weekend escape to the Eternal City. Here are my three tips for your three perfect days in Rome.

1.     Plan ahead of time

Of course you can’t see all of Rome in just a weekend, but you certainly can see the historic center of Rome. To maximize your time and to avoid long lines, it is essential to have a game plan before you go.  Keep in mind that every minute will count and don’t plan on sleeping much.

If this is your first visit to Italy, it pays to work with a travel agent or an incoming tour operator to help you find the best deals and to plan your trip. Quiiky is the first and only Italian tour operator specializing in gay and lesbian travel. Quiiky is a five-year old company affiliated with Sonders & Beach. Quiiky is a member of the International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association. Quiiky can arrange all of part of your trip. Be sure to ask about a private tour guides in Rome. Private tour guides, while expensive, are a smart way to get lots of local knowledge and they can customize a tour to suit your interests. Visit quiiky.com.

Adventurous travelers will find it easy to self-organize a trip to Rome too. You can buy most of your tickets online and in advance. There is also plenty of information online on the history of Rome and the historic attractions. Now with Google Maps and Google Images, you can almost map out and visualize your entire trip even before you leave.
