An Eating Europe tour gives you the chance to experience London’s Soho

Berlin-based ManAboutWorld Global Correspondent Adam Groffman submitted this piece about London SoHo for ManAboutWorld. It’s small but backed with restaurants, pubs and cultural options. He also shared a blog post about the differences between London’s Soho and NYC’s Soho and made an interactive quiz to go with it. Take the quiz here and find out which SoHo you are.

London may draw millions of international tourists to see Big Ben or Buckingham Palace, but Eating Europe’s new Twilight Soho Food Tour is the best way to experience  London and its hippest neighborhood. Soho is located in the center of London’s West End and offers exciting, original shopping and dining options — including the city’s premier gay and lesbian bars and clubs. If you’re searching around for your next trip or for a new place to visit in London, the Soho neighborhood is not to be missed.

Our correspondent Adam Groffman chimes in with some wise and worldly travel tips for gay boys everywhere. Check out Adam’s must-read blog here:

Traveling as a gay individual isn’t much different than traveling any other way. But sometimes there are special considerations to be made. In some countries you might receive funny looks when you’re a same-sex couple booking one bed in your hotel room. Those kinds of awkward situations can make or break a holiday. We all like to travel to relax when on a vacation. To make gay travel easier and more enjoyable, below are a few of my favorite travel tips for LGBT travelers.

The gay, funky, hipster neighborhood of Noord in Amsterdam.

Our intrepid Berlin Correspondent, Adam Groffman, just returned from four days in Amsterdam. Always the hipster, Adam explored the little-known neighborhood of Noord, reminiscent of London’s East End, if a bit grittier, and full of artists warehouses, parks, beaches, industrial chic bars serving organic food.

Read about Adam’s Dutch adventure over at his blog, Travels of Adam. For our full insider’s guide to Amsterdam, check out our Dec. 2012 issue here.

Story and photo by Berlin-based ManAboutWorld Global Correspondent Adam Groffman

I’ve now visited Cologne twice and I’d say it’s one of my favorite cities in Germany. With nearly 10% of the local Cologne residents identifying as gay or lesbian, according to the local tourism office, the city has a unique and special atmosphere. Maybe it’s the upbeat attitude of the local residents in Cologne. Maybe it’s the innate friendliness that seems to define the city. Or maybe it’s the fact that people will actually start conversations with strangers on the street. This open-minded attitude and friendly atmosphere makes Cologne a friendly and fun place to visit — and it’s why I’ve been back twice in the past six months!

Tel Aviv, Adam Groffman

Our Global Correspondent and true man about world Adam Groffman quit his job as a graphic designer in Boston and went on a life-changing 15+ month trip around the world. Since 2011 Adam has been living in Berlin – Europe’s most hipster city. His blog, Travels of Adam, focuses on finding the coolest cultural things to do around the world. We spoke to him about his passion for travel, and we selected his journeys as this month’s Parting Shots in our magazine. Here’s the expanded story and more of his photos.

Why do you love to travel?

For me, traveling is a great way to learn, see and experience new things. While I might try new things when I’m home, it’s when I’m out exploring a new part of the world that I really begin to embrace change and try new things. I’ve learned so much from traveling — not just typical skills a backpacker or traveler might pick up, but life skills too.

1. How far in advance do you plan your trips?

It varies. I tend to plan at least a month or two beforehand, but I’ve been known to book quite a few last-minute trips. Sometimes if the airfare is right, why not?!

2. Who do you travel with?

I’ve traveled every which way and I can’t honestly tell you how I prefer it. I’ve done group tours, trips with friends or groups of friends, alone and with my boyfriend. I think there’s a time and a place (and a destination!) for every type of travel.

Our peripatetic Global Correspondent Adam Groffman recently visited London, which was our big cover feature in our July/August issue (on Apple’s newsstand now!) Here’s his report on a delicious food tour.

This weekend I joined a food tour in London with Eating London. The 3.5 hour walking tour through London’s East End visited 10 different tasting spots. Starting in Old Spitalfields Market and staying with a few blocks radius of the market & Shoreditch station, we sampled everything from a bacon sandwich (at St. John Bread & Wine) to banana bread pudding (at The English Restaurant)—plus other English food staples such as fish & chips (at Poppies) and an East End classic: a salted beef bagel sandwich at The Beigel Bake.
