We spent a month travelling in Vietnam during April and May 2015.

We started in the South in motorbike crazy Ho Chi Minh City (still called Saigon by locals). We discovered a few gay bars in Saigon with our friend Quan.

We then headed to Central Vietnam to Hoi An, Hue and Da Nang. In Hoi An we immersed ourselves in the yummy food with a cooking class and a foodie tour with the excellent Vespa Adventures. We learnt to make delicious Cau Lao noodles and yummy Banh Xeo pancakes.

Our final stop was in the North in Hanoi where saw the famous water puppet show and also took an overnight cruise to the magnificent Halong Bay.

Here’s our gay Vietnam travel video of our month eating our way South to North (above). Click here to see their previous post on gay Vietnam.

Vietnam was one of the gay friendlier countries we visited in Asia:

  • it has never had any anti gay laws (unlike the US and UK)
  • on 1st January 2015, the Law on Marriage and Family came into effect, outlawing the ban on gay weddings
  • it held its first (peaceful!) pride parade on 5 August 2012 in Hanoi and has been going strong since
  • This year Viet Pride takes place July 31-August 2 in Hanoi. Info here.

Although we found Vietnam to be a relaxed and tolerant country towards us as gay tourists, Vietnamese society still remains very conservative towards homosexuality. For example, The Law on Marriage and Family only allows gay weddings but doesn’t actually recognise them, and many of the gay guys we met were very careful and secretive about their orientation.
