The Matterhorn behind the snow-capped green alps of Zermatt

We’ve said it before — if you only ski in Europe once in your lifetime, make it Zermatt, a quaint, posh town tucked in the shadow of the Matterhorn, full of cobblestone charm and some of the best skiing in the world. From afar, the city glows with the surrounding hug of the Alps. It’s a destination worthy of your time and money any year, but this year, the world will turn its attention to Zermatt to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the first Matterhorn ascent.

Events celebrating the first ascent of the Matterhorn go from April through September, but we recommend coming in July, a unique and gorgeous time to see the Swiss Alps, when you’ll witness landscapes of green mountains topped with white snowcaps. From July 9-August 25, the town will present “The Matterhorn Story,” at an open-air theater. Food and music festivals will be active during that time, as well.
